Female a cappella choir synchronise heartbeats for international title

16 July 2013

Kent based female a cappella choir are working hard on synchronising not only their heartbeats but their performance including facial expression and emotion for the performance of their life as they compete for the international barbershop title in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The group of forty women meet every week to rehearse for competition plus extra weekend long rehearsals to fine tune performance and sound.  Michelle Daniels said “Our competition is not only based on the sound that the chorus can make but also the performance including expression of the singers, the emotion each individual member commits to the song and the choreography.  It takes a lot of hard work, hours of rehearsal and dedication to bring all of these elements together in one single performance”.

The hours spent together in rehearsals and the unified goal to be the best that they can be brings the chorus together in a close friendship including members from all walks of life and all ages.  “The chorus not only supports each other with their singing but acts as a large support group offering friendship, advice, a shoulder to cry on in times of difficulty.  Members have been through some tough times, losing loved ones, illness and redundancy and find the chorus a welcome relief from home life and a chance to forget.  With an age range of 20 to 74 our group covers a large age group.  We take our singing very seriously but we also we ensure we have fun doing it!” said Michelle.

Viva Acappella will be representing the UK & Netherlands at the International Barbershop Championships being held in Honolulu, Hawaii. The four day annual event, organised by US based Sweet Adelines International, attracts over 10,000 singers from all over the world and will be hosted at the International Hawai’i Convention Center in Honolulu from 5th – 9th November 2013.
