What do you do when your chorus wins a national competition and you find out you’ll be representing your country in Hawaii? Celebrate? Cry? Panic about fundraising? How about ‘Singing your way Slim?’
This was the predicament that Bexley based female chorus group Viva Acappella found themselves in when they were announced the overall winners of the national barbershop competition in Birmingham back in May this year.
Viva Acappella were absolutely stunned to find out they had beaten the competition from the UK and The Netherlands. After coming down to earth in the weeks following they were tasked with thinking of all the practicalities that would enable them to make the trip in November 2013. This means the next 18 months the group will be fundraising like crazy. What could they do? What were they good at? And so our slimming club was born, with the tongue in cheek title ‘Fat Club’!
Why give money to the usual slimming groups when we could do it ourselves? On the first session 12 members were weighed in before the start of their usual Thursday night rehearsal and given tools to help them start their slim for Hawaii. Each week they award the Fat Club slimmer of the week (the person with the biggest weight loss) and other awards include Slimmer of the Month and recognition for every half stone lost by a member.
After 7 weeks the popularity of the group has grown so much that they have increased to 20 members. That’s half the chorus taking part! To date the ‘Fat Club have lost 7st 5 ½ lbs - that’s more than the smallest chorus member!
What’s important is that the group have fun, encourage each other, swap recipes and slimming books, bring in slimming food for others to taste AND lose weight whilst raising money for the Hawaii fund.
Singing is such fun and it is scientifically proven to be healthy by relieving stress as it releases endorphins to make you feel good. Viva Acappella have made singing even healthier. Viva Acappella - the singers who sing together and slim together!
