Kent based choir wins place to sing in Las Vegas
Bexley based female a cappella choir, Viva Acappella, brought home a number of medals and awards after competing at the annual national barbershop competition (Sweet Adelines Region 31) at the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham, this weekend. The chorus, made up of thirty four women aged between 17yrs-74yrs, competed against choruses from all over the UK & Netherlands, winning the gold medal in the midsize chorus category and silver in the overall competition. They missed out on the gold medal place against a chorus twice their size by just 1 point. They were also awarded the ‘Most Improved Chorus’ award and the award for the music category. As a result Viva Acappella will be competing in the International competition held in Las Vegas in Autumn 2016, against choruses from all over the world.
In addition the chorus had four quartets compete in the quartet’s competition on the Friday, more than any other chorus. Hot Note won the gold medal, Vice Versa won 5th place, DeciBelles won 8th place and Junction 4 took 13th place. Hot Note will be competing at the International Competition in Las Vegas in October this year. Viva Acappella’s Musical Director, Gaynor Schofield commented, “This was the best weekend ever in barbershop for me. We achieved the highest score ever in chorus, most improved chorus, gold medal in the mid-size chorus contest with only 34 singers, 2nd place overall with only 1 point behind the winners and a gold for the quartet. I’m so proud”
