A capella fever grows worldwide

07 January 2013

Viva Acappella, the ‘Pitch Perfect’ a cappella show group is following a similar path to the characters in the latest Hollywood blockbuster.

‘Pitch Perfect’ follows the journey of misfit student Beca who dreams of working in the music business in LA. Soon after joining Barden University she takes up an internship at the school’s radio station.  After finding out she has been skipping classes, her father, who teaches at the University says he will only fund her venture if she joins one of the School’s clubs.

Following some persuasion she joins the all-female group The Bellas.  The group are in fierce competition the school’s male group, The Treblemakers, and go against them in a regional a cappella competition. Due to their bland set list with old songs they only place second.

Beca feels the group should add some contemporary music into their set in order to stand above the rest. After disagreements within the group Beca is kicked out, but they see the error of their ways when they make it through to the national competition after a disqualification of another group. Once the group mix up their package with recent chart hits they then go on to success and win the national trophy.

Viva Acappella member Adel Hanily can closely relate to the story as she joined the choir after moving to London to pursue her goal in the music business. After moving she took on internships, worked at an independent record label and now works for an international entertainment company. She could never have predicted the success that Viva Acapella has had since she joined as they won the Sweet Adelines national competition in 2012. This year the forty members will be heading to Honolulu in Hawaii for the international championships and will be up against choruses of 100 members and more from across the USA and the world.

Similarly to the film the group are also aiming to keep their repertoire contemporary and recently added a medley of Bruno Mars ‘Amazing’, Katy Perry ‘Firework’ and The Black Eyed Peas ‘I Gotta Feeling’ to their ammo.

All fingers are crossed for international success in November.
